A Cicero, Illinois man is facing serious charges for his potentially deadly assault on his girlfriend. According to the Chicago Tribune, Mario Scott is accused of repeatedly shooting his girlfriend several times after the two were embroiled in a heated argument. What should have been a typical night at home quickly took a turn for the worse when an alcohol-influenced Scott and his girlfriend began arguing.

The Altercation:

At around 11:30 p.m. on Saturday, January 27, Scott was reportedly drinking alcohol and playing dominoes with his girlfriend, Romance Martin, 33. It is unclear what led to their argument but police spokesman Ray Hanania with the Cicero Police Department has stated that at some point, “suddenly left the table and went into his bedroom” and came back with a .22-caliber semi-automatic handgun.” That’s when he shot his girlfriend 11 times in the midsection.

Then to make matters worse, her six children – ages 1, 4, 7, 10, 11 and 14 – were inside the home at the time of the shooting. Scott is said to have asked the two older children to help him get his wounded girlfriend to the car. He also took her older daughter’s cell phone away and he refused to allow the other four children to call 911. He transported her to Stroger Hospital in Chicago and left her there. Sometime later, he returned with the two older children so they could see her.

The Charges:

On Tuesday, January 30, Mario Scott was arrested and charged with one count each of attempted murder and aggravated battery with a firearm. The Cicero Police Department has contacted the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services on behalf of the children. The department is now working to establish a safety plan for the children. According to the Chicago Sun-Times, Judge Kristyna C. Ryan set Scott’s bail at $1 million. He is scheduled to reappear in court on Feb. 6. The victim has had multiple surgeries and remains in critical condition.
