At a time when most people are preparing for the upcoming Christmas holiday, two families in Baton Rouge, LA are prepared to bury their loved ones. According to WAFB News, officers with the Baton Rouge Police Department were dispatched to a home near the 10000 block of Catalina Dr around 7:00 p.m. on Saturday, December 17.
It has been reported that officers arrived at a harrowing scene with a 13-year-old girl screaming in agony for her mother. The lifeless body of Tangela Detiege was found at the scene. Her death was the result of domestic violence she suffered at the hands of her ex-boyfriend, identified as Matthew Thornton.
The two reportedly became embroiled in a heated argument and Thornton retaliated by shooting Detiege multiple times. By the time police arrived, Thornton had already fled the scene.
Initially, reports were unclear because there was speculation that the shooting was a murder-suicide. Many Facebook users flooded Detiege and Thornton’s timelines offering their condolences but apparently, Thornton was not dead at the time his ex-girlfriend was found.
Hours later, around 5:30 a.m. the following morning, LSU Police found Thornton dead inside a vehicle on the levee at River Road near Ben Hur Road. According to The Advocate, he reportedly died of a suspected self-inflicted gunshot wound.
