When news spread that Project Runway fashion designer, Mychael Knight, had suddenly passed away on Tuesday, October 17, 2017, millions of fans were shocked. Many were confused as to what caused a seemingly healthy 39 year old, like Mychael, to die so young from a non-trauma related cause. As more news began to surface it became clear that his death may not have been so sudden and he wasn’t so healthy after all.
It was confirmed by Mychael’s family, that he passed away from intestinal issues. At that time, it still seemed unclear as to how that suddenly caused his death. But after further research it was discovered that in July of this year (2017), Mychael Knight revealed, on social media, that for 5 years, he’d been battling a severe case of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) that was wreaking havoc on his immune system. See the screenshot of his Facebook post below, which has since been deleted from his page:
(Video) Mychael Knight Bravely Worked ‘Til His Last Days
Now, heart-wrenching video has surfaced, via TMZ, of what was Mychael’s last public appearance about one month prior to his death, when he attended a New York fashion show on September 8th. He was still working until he couldn’t work anymore and that displayed an incredible amount of will and determination on his part. The sad thing is that when you watch the video below, in hindsight it’s pretty clear to see that Mychael was also dying. However, at that time, many who saw him probably assumed, or at least prayed that the brotha would pull through and get back to his normal self. He looked very frail and extremely thin, as he posed for photos with some of his models. Check out the video below…
Facts About IBS…Can It Cause Death?
Although Mychael looked extremely frail in his last appearance, his condition, IBS, doesn’t cause death, according to what Dr. Nitin Ahuja revealed to the Today show, following Knight’s passing. (FYI: Dr. Ahuja is not Knight’s doctor, but just offering expert info for clarity purposes):
Via Today: IBS “can cause a lot of distress in someone’s life, but it’s not fatal,” said Dr. Nitin Ahuja, an assistant professor in the division of gastroenterology at the University of Pennsylvania. “It can, however, mimic other gastrointestinal conditions.”
The ‘other gastrointestinal condition’ that can, however, cause similar symptoms that Mychael experienced, is Chron’s disease, which does in fact attack the immune system and can cause death as a result.

It’s not always meant for us to understand why some of us have to leave this earth so much sooner than others. However, tragedies like this are a reminder that we should always take a minute to give our loved ones their ‘flowers’ while they’re still here, because the next minute isn’t promised to any of us. Our sincerest condolences go out to the family of Mychael Knight. May he rest in power and peace.
