Years after her husband’s death, Ohio woman Valerie Spuill, learned a devastating secret that almost destroyed her.
Imagine losing the man you loved for years, a man that you married and had children with to discover that the man you loved was actually your father. Take a moment to process that information. Valerie Spruill from Doylestown, Ohio, discovered that her husband, Percy, was also her father, the Akron Beacon Journal reports. The 60-year-old woman learned the truth six years after Percy’s death. Valerie Spruill revealed that she had no idea she had married her father. It wasn’t until he died in 1998 that a relative came forward to tell her the truth, which she confirmed through a DNA test. The devastating results meant that her children’s father is also their grandfather. Spruill decided to share her story in the hopes of helping others in similar situations.
I think her reason for coming forward was that she sees so many kids who are in bad situations, have single-parent households, and the single parent is not much interested in them. They’ll be doing their thing. And, I think she wanted to send the message if I can get through this and have a productive life, which she did, then you can get through your situation too,” Akron Beacon Journal columnist Bob Dyer told Newsnet5.com. She immediately started to get counseling, which she said has been very valuable. I think it helped her understand that she didn’t do anything wrong.
Here is what happened, according to Beacon Journal columnist Bob Dyer:
At the young age of just 3 months old, Spruill was sent to live with her grandparents. As she grew up, her family lied to her and told her that her grandfather was her father and that her mother was a “family friend.” She later learned who her real mother was. Her biological mother was a “night lady” who was jailed on sex charges in 1980. Valerie also later learned that her biological father was Percy Spruill, who was 15 years old when he met Valerie’s mother.
Somehow, Valerie and Percy later married. Throughout their marriage, Valerie said she heard rumors that Percy was her father, according to the Akron Beacon Journal. In April 1998, Percy died at the age of 60. In 2004, an uncle told Valerie the rumors were true, and a DNA test confirmed it.
Dealing with the shocking revelations, Valerie Spruill wants to be an example. The 65-year-old Doylestown woman wanted to show other folks born into miserable situations that they can still lead good, productive, fulfilling lives. Spruill has now retired, she worked for 34 years in the accounting department at Goodyear. She has three kids and eight grandkids.
Despite what she’s been through, Spruill is optimistic and upbeat. Through her life, Spruill has fought through serious health problems that she believes were brought on by the stress of discovering the longtime family secret in 2004, when her husband/father died.
If this old lady done come through all this, and God’s still got her here and still with a good heart because you find so many mean, vicious people in the world, and you don’t have to be you can love no matter what you’ve come through or where you’ve been in this world
