Singer Ciara is trending this weekend but it’s not because of new music. She ruffled a few feathers on her Instagram page when she posted a video of Pastor John Gray III giving a sermon to women who aspire to be married. The happily married wife of Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson tweeted out a video that contains a video clip where Pastor Gray III is encouraging women to carry themselves as “wives” and not to walk in the spirit of the girlfriend. Not only did Ciara share the video on her Instagram page but she shared the video on her Twitter page as well.
In the video, Pastor John Gray III states the following:
He that finds a wife finds a good thing.’ It didn’t say, ‘He that finds a girl that he’s attracted to, who he then begins to date, who he then calls his girlfriend, who he then buys a ring, proposes to and makes her his fiancée, who he then marries later who becomes his wife

While many women applauded Ciara for sharing the video as they agreed with Pastor Gray III’s words, many of her followers felt like the sermon was misogynistic. Many women felt like the video took the opportunity to point out what women do wrong instead of advising men on how to walk in the “spirit of the husband”. Several women reminded Ciara that not too long ago, she was in a relationship with trap rap star, Future. Ciara had plans to marry Future but she reportedly called off their engagement due to cheating rumors. Some women were offended as they felt like Ciara was looking down on women.

Ciara’s playing a dangerous game. You should never, no matter how perfect your relationship/marriage appears to be, sit on a throne and tell people why they’re not romantically successful. You can be the queen of the ball today and have cake in your face tomorrow!

Every so often, Ciara does something that reminds you to be grateful for the time Rihanna got her ass together on Twitter.

I think you & your family are wonderful, but this is a trash take. Marriage isn’t a reward for good behavior. Teaching women they’re “unworthy” is part of the reason so many end up settling for relationships where they’re disrespected and unappreciated.

Man! U could've kept ur opinion 2 yourself on this one. I understand where ur coming from but everybody makes mistakes including u. didn't u b@have a baby before you were married? According to that u should've waited to you had that ring on your finger

And the fact that you’re married now has little to do with how you carried yourself before marriage. You happened to find a good man. There are women out here who want to be married, carry themselves well, and still end up with a trash dude

So many sermons are tailored to telling women what they're doing wrong. But, why aren't there more teachings about men being the husband any woman would say 'yes' to? Not saying women should propose. Saying men get ya act together first!

Ciara, honey, no. We rooted for you when you were going through your mess. I’m so disappointed that you would share something so silly. What pastor John Gray is saying here is intellectually lazy and a twisting of scripture. That’s not what Prov. 18:22 meant at all. https://t.co/IePlLJrVOL

I think we all could've guessed Ciara was going to be one of *those* women after she got married.

Now, it’s important to note that Ciara just posted half of of the sermon. In reality, Pastor Gray III speaks to both men and women on what they can do to find a mate and have a healthy union. Many of Ciara’s followers were in her corner and rooting for her. However, with Ciara only posting Pastor Gray III’s sermon for the women, Ciara appeared to be one of those “wives” who offers solicited advice for women instead of remembering that dating can pose its challenges even for the most virtuous woman. After her tweet garnered so much discussion, Ciara responded with the following:
It appears that Ciara was giving advice to all women, single or married, that they should love themselves. With each post, Ciara wrote the hashtag, Level Up. Don’t be surprised if Level Up is the name of her new single. This could be a strategic move to get people talking about her again. If so, it’s working.
