Idris Elba once revealed that he would never get married again. In speaking with Essence magazine in July of 2017, Elba seemed to be focused on his passion of directing and putting love on the back burner. Sharing that he had been there and done that, Elba boldly stated that marriage wasn’t for him. The British actor was married to makeup artist Hanne Norgaard from 1999 to 2003 and lawyer Sonya Hamlin for six months in 2006.
Am I ever gonna get remarried? I don’t think so. Yeah, I don’t think so, Idris Elba said to Essence. Marriage is an institution of sorts. And I’ve done it. It’s not for everybody. It’s not my life’s calling.
Well, it appears that love changed Elba’s mind as he proposed to his girlfriend, Sabrina Dhowre in front of a packed audience. In Dalston, London Friday evening, at the screening of his directorial debut of the movie, Yardie, Elba got down on one knee and asked for Dhowre’s hand in marriage. According to The Daily Mail, she excitedly said yes as the crowd cheered. Rio Cinema and others present at the screening took to Twitter to congratulate the couple.

Idris met Sabrina, a 29-year-old model of Somali descent who won the Miss Vancouver pageant in 2014, while filming the movie, The Mountain Between Us. Elba spoke with PEOPLE magazine about falling in love while making a movie about falling in love. Idris Elba keeps his love life pretty private. So, when the actor showed up with a beautiful woman on the read carpet, people took notice. Elba and Dhowre stepped out together at the film’s premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival. It was her first time on a red carpet and Elba as well as Dhowre were excited.
Elba and Dhowre have been dating for less than a year. Elba has had a rocky relationship history. Maybe the third time is the charm.
