It Don’t Matter If You’re Black or White?
Imagine living your best life religiously celebrating Black History Month every year, or routinely spitting lines like:
“Son, do you know why I’m stopping you for?”
‘Cause I’m young and I’m black and my hat’s real low?”
…and BOOM! you learn that you’re actually a white person.
Well, that’s essentially what happened to Verda Byrd. Verda was adopted by an African-American couple, and raised as their only child. After 70 long years she learned that she was not in fact black at all. (That’s a bummer!)
Verda Byrd has told people she is black her whole life - but she is no Rachel Dolezal. Verda actually lived the life of a black person, she didn’t spray tan her body or go out and buy weaves to appear black. She was raised black!
According to local news station Ken 5, Verda stated:
“I didn’t know what I was…It was never told to me that I was white.”
Now I know what you’re thinking, couldn’t she tell her true race by just looking in the mirror? But shades of blackness vary. Black people have many different colors and hues.
